Once upon a time I was an atheist scientist who did not care much about writing. That would be three strikes against penning a spiritual memoir, right? Fast forward ten years and I am still a scientist, but I also walk the path of a spiritual seeker. And I walk hand in hand with my father, my spirit guide.
The first time I grabbed a pen, it was at 2 a.m., a few days after my beloved pet passed away at the age of 15 1/2, two weeks after my birthday and one week after Mother’s day. I just could not believe what happened afterward, and I could not sleep until all the events were sufficiently recorded. But the next night another memory surfaced and I wrote feverishly between 2 and 3 a.m. This went on for a whole week, until I realized that that I can write during daytime – thank God – and that I needed to share my stories of spiritual awakening.
Here is one of the many amazing things that happened after Sugar died:
Excerpt from …Breadcrumbs…Searching for a Father Who Never Left
“It is now Thursday evening. Sugar has been gone for five days.
I arrive home from work to a quiet house. Chad and the girls are at a restaurant, and Red is asleep in the living room. I unpack my bag, then turn on the answering machine. Someone from the hospital called that Sugar’s ashes are ready to be picked up. My heart jolts when I hear her name. I take a deep breath, then play the rest of the messages. When I get to the very last one, I freeze with utter disbelief. I am listening to a dog barking.
I play the message over and over again: nothing else, just barking.
I stagger to the stairs and sit down on the bottom step, completely baffled.
How did she pull this off?
Wiping away my tears of anguish and my tears of solace, I dare to imagine Sugar and my father giving high fives to each other.”
Our daughter Kati is also a talented author who loves to write about fantasy and magic for children of all ages, encouraging them to keep on believing that magic is real. Kati also loves to read books, and to imagine worlds beyond what is seen by average people.
Kati was nine when she wrote “Kate and The Fairy”, a fictional short story about two young girls, whose paths cross quite illegally. Kate is a witch who lives on Magica, a planet usually inaccessible to humans. But Kate and her family are Magics, and are able to cross between the two worlds. Once on Magica, however, they became separated. The different regions of Magica and its inhabitants are isolated from each other, and Kate lost all contact with her family. She now shares her home with four pets: Hank the dragon, Murala, the unicorn, Caroline the pegasus and Sarah a unicorn with wings.
One day on her way to the witch assembly Kate comes across a sickly fairy who was lying by the roadside, barely alive. Kate decided to break the rule forbidding witches to interact with other Magics. There is something all too familiar about this fairy, something that makes Kate wonder: maybe, just maybe…
Excerpt from Kate and the Fairy
“‘Bee-bee-beep! Bee-bee-beep!’ Kate Farrington’s alarm clock chirped her good morning. But there was something else that woke her up–something crawling on her leg. Kate quickly turned off her alarm to see what was on her. Her eyes swung open as she looked down. The young witch laughed. It was only a spider. She frowned remembering that witches just don’t laugh. Fairies laugh, mummies… well, try to laugh anyway. It’s hard to do wrapped up in all that bandage. But all magics laugh except witches. Kate hated this rule. Of course she had to follow it because if she didn’t… Witch Jail! She sighed and went to let the spider free. Then flopped on her bed and slowly drifted to sleep. The next thing she knew Murala (mer-ah-lah) her pet unicorn was neighing for food. Kate woke up immediately and fed her. She glanced at the clock and almost screamed. It was 3:00 in the afternoon! She would be late for a witch assembly! Every witch in all of Witchitopia was coming and she couldn’t be late! She grabbed a piece of bread, a black and white canteen bottle of water, and a dark red apple. Kate stuffed these things in a forest green backpack and ran out the door throwing food behind her for her dragon, Pegasus, and unicorn with pegasus wings. I guess you could say she had a lot of pets and this weekend she was getting 4 Angel Bears! Suddenly she stopped. There on the curb lay a little girl. Her clothes were tattered and ripped and she seemed to have some pink things attached to her back! One of them flinched. Kate gasped. They were wings! She was a fairy! But what was a fairy doing in Witchitopia? Scared, the young witch turned to go home, then remembered the assembly. “I’m not gonna let some dumb fairy ruin this big day for me,” She thought. “Today I’m having my big speech.” And with renewed strength she ran all the way to the church for the assembly. It was long, three hours of blah, blah, blah, except for her speech. ‘That was all, thank you everyone for coming. Now let’s get down to business.'”
